Rolling Friction of a Run-Flat Condition SUV Tire

Dynamic testing was conducted on an SUV with a test tire at one rear wheel location. SUV speed was measured with a Logitech V-Box II Lite 5Hz GPS Data Logger. An exterior-mounted video camera captured tire sidewall deflection and road noise, while an on-board video camera captured steering wheel rotation and operator motion. Test speeds ranged from 39 to 53mph. Baseline overall rolling friction with all tires inflated to 38psi was compared to overall rolling friction with the test tire inflation pressure reduced to 20, 10 and 3psi.
